The FDO Forum is organising its 1st International Conference of FAIR Digital Objects (FDO2022). This event will bring together technical, scientific, industry, and science-policy stakeholders with the aim to boost the development and implementation of FDOs worldwide and transform the Internet into more than just a data space: into a meaningful data space.

This conference will include a variety of different formats (keynotes, invited presentations, community sessions, lightning talks, panels, hackathons, etc.), and will be organised over 3 days as part of Leiden, European City of Science 2022 activities.

The call for abstracts is open. Submit your abstract by 10 July 2022.

The 1st International Conference on FAIR Digital Objects sets four main goals:

  • Present and discuss the anatomy of a FDO
  • Showcase FDO-Based studies & implementations
  • Act as a forum for developing FDO-Based Approaches
  • Propose solutions to facilitate global adoption of FDOS

FDO2022 will conclude with the formal signing and publication of the ‘Leiden Declaration on FAIR Digital Objects’.

From 24-28 October, in the context of Leiden 2022: European City of Science, there will be a ‘Hotzone’week dedicated to FAIR and specifically to FAIR Digital Objects as the core ‘machine actionable units of information’ necessary to build an Internet and Web of FAIR data and services. The week features two closely related events: the 2nd FAIR Convergence Symposium (24-26 October) and the 1st International Conference on FAIR Digital Objects (26-28 October). The two events will explore the contention that the FAIR principles, and their application through FAIR Digital Objects, are important steps to maximise the machine actionability of data and other information.

2nd FAIR Convergence Symposium

Co-organised by CODATA and GO FAIR, building on the success of the first event in 2020, the 2nd FAIR Convergence Symposium will explore the state of art in FAIR implementation across a range of research domains and initiatives. Priority will be given to interactive and working meetings for a set of parallel activities which are emerging as the core of convergence around FAIR and which include, but are not limited to: FAIR Implementation Profiles; the digital representation of units of measurement; FAIR vocabularies, terminologies, ontologies and other semantic artefacts; working models for a core interoperability framework and case studies from the EU funded international WorldFAIR project (starting June 2022) and wider initiatives; cooperation, alignment and interoperability among major Open Science infrastructures, and so on. The results of these meetings will be summarised and presented at a transition event bridging the two conferences.

Transition event

Taking place on the evening of Wednesday 26 October, in the magnificent main hall of the new Naturalis Biodiversity Center, as a plenary meeting, followed by a reception the transition event will also include a presentation of the Open Science Cloud Executives Roundtable (OSCER) and a proposed statement on the role of FAIR and FAIR Digital Objects in achieving the promise of effective Open Science infrastructures. The draft ‘Leiden Declaration on FAIR Digital Objects’ will also be debated.

1st International Conference on FAIR Digital Objects

The transition event will pass the FAIR hotzone week baton to the 1st International Conference on FAIR Digital Objects. Bringing together for the first time at this scale key scientific, industry, and science-policy stakeholders, the conference will present and discuss practical implementation frameworks of FDO architectures and successful (working implementations) case studies where FDOs have been implemented. The conference will also propose mechanisms to endorse technical specifications and initiate needed national & international formal standardisation processes as well as document and propose solutions that facilitate global adoption of FDOs across science and society. The 1st International Conference on FAIR Digital Objects, and the Hotzone week as a whole, will conclude with the formal signing and publication of the ‘Leiden Declaration on FAIR Digital Objects’. More about the conference

The two events will be managed separately and will launch dedicated websites in the coming weeks. Follow the pages and communications of the events’ organisers, the FAIR Digital Objects Forum, CODATA and GO FAIR for updates.

The Hotzone Week on FAIR at the Leiden European City of Science is an event that no one interested in FAIR should miss.

From 24-28 October, in the context of Leiden 2022: European City of Science, there will be a week dedicated to FAIR implementation and specifically to FAIR Digital Objects as the core ‘machine actionable units of information’ necessary to build an Internet and Web of FAIR data and services. The week features two closely related events: the 2nd FAIR Convergence Symposium (24-26 October) and the 1st International Conference on FAIR Digital Objects (26-28 October). The two events will explore the contention that the FAIR guiding principles, and their application through FAIR Digital Objects, are important steps to maximise the machine actionability of data and other information.

The co-organisers of the 2nd FAIR Convergence Symposium, CODATA and GO FAIR, agreed that this years’ edition will concentrate on smaller, high-priority, strategic and working meetings to encourage convergence on and implementation of FAIR, rather than convening a large open Symposium so soon after International Data Week and in the context of ongoing challenges for intercontinental travel.

Most of the meetings will be organised as hybrid events, allowing for both in-person and online participation.

The following meetings and events are being planned and should form the FAIR Convergence part of the week:

The above list is not exhaustive and other interactive and working meetings may be added to contribute to convergence on selected aspects of FAIR implementation.

Programme Overview and Registration

Final overview of the FAIR Convergence Symposium programme is available for download from here.

Most of the Symposium events are marked as Open sessions. To attend these events a registration should be completed at: https://bit.ly/FAIRConvergence2022Registration

Registration for in-person participation closed on 14 October, 12:00 (pm) CEST. If you missed the deadline and would wish to inquire about the possibility to join the Symposium onsite, please contact the CODATA Secretariat at info@codata.org. Note that the capacity of the physical venue is full for some of the sessions.

Registration for virtual participation closed on 21 October, 12:00 (pm) CEST.

All sessions will  be recorded and the recordings will be made available via CODATA Vimeo shortly after the event. Unless you plan to join the session virtually, please kindly leave the place to another colleague. There is no need to register to get access to the recordings.

Join the 1st Workshop on Ontologies for FAIR and FAIR Ontologies (Onto4FAIR) on 13 September 2022 in Vienna, Austria!

A key aspect in making data FAIR is the ability of machines to automatically find, access, interoperate, and reuse data with none or minimal human intervention. For that, the ability of properly and semantically describing data is essential. The workshop has the following goals:

  • to bring together leaders from academia, industry and user institutions
  • to discuss the adoption of FAIR principles in real-world requirements.
  • to serve to inform industry and user representatives about existing research efforts that may meet their requirements.
  • to investigate how the FAIR principles are supported by the use of schemes, vocabulaires, and ontologies that ideally are themselves FAIR.
  • to discuss the challenges and perspectives in adopting FAIR principles.

Submit your paper by 27 June 2022! Authors will be notified on 30 July 2022.
Information about submission guidelines

This workshop is co-located with the SEMANTiCS Conference taking place on 13-15 September 2022. To join the workshop, you need to register for the SEMANTiCS Conference.
