An Hourglass approach to a global Internet of FAIR Data and Services<\/h3>\n

FAIR is about automating the F<\/strong>indability, A<\/strong>ccessibility, I<\/strong>nteroperability and R<\/strong>eusability of digital resources populating the Internet. Although the formulation of FAIR Principles<\/a> occurred relatively recently (2016), numerous infrastructure frameworks have been proposed over the last two decades that anticipated and, in many cases demonstrated, behaviors described by the FAIR Principles.<\/p>\n

\"convergenceAmong these frameworks are the Digital Object Architecture (first proposed by Kahn and Wilenski<\/a> and more recently developed by the GEDE Working Group<\/a> of RDA) which proposes abstraction layers for automated data operations. IBM\u2019s Linked Data Platform, later to become a W3C standard<\/a>, harnesses Semantic Web approaches emphasizing operations that are contingent on semantically rich (domain-relevant) descriptions. Later, the FAIR Data Point (GitHub<\/a>), inspired by the Linked Data Platform,\u00a0targeted development more explicitly related to the FAIR Principles. This site<\/a> describes FAIR Data Points, a proposed standard and an example implementation.<\/p>\n

The scalable and transparent \u2018routing\u2019 of data, algorithms, and compute mediated by FAIR Digital Objects or FAIR Data Points is the essential feature of the envisioned Internet of FAIR Data & Services (IFDS).<\/p>\n

FDP working group<\/h3>\n

Driven by projects responding to the COVID-19 pandemic (both within the VODAN IN and elsewhere) an emerging global network of COVID-related FAIR Data Points is in development. The status of these deployments have been reported in the GO FAIR\/ CODATA Convergence Symposium<\/a>, November 30 to December 4, 2020.<\/p>\n

Three-point FAIRification icons<\/h3>\n
